SHOT DOWN SOUTH are a four piece Melodic Death Metalcore (that’s right A Melodic Death Metalcore) band from Carton Georgia now I understand classifying these guys as such will brew quite the storm but ironically that’s exactly what these four guys are doing with this EP, So with very little information on this band and only finding them via a follow on Instagram I jumped at the chance to review this EP before these guys become too big to get a hold of from the smaller review circle

Let me paint you a picture real quickly before getting direct into the album, you’ve had a long hard day at work, you’ve returned home to a copy of this EP with a note that specifies this will relax you after a hard day at work, so you put the disc into the player and press play, pour your beverage of choice sit back and relax, You hear a quite eary introduction followed by piano calming down….before that storm

As stated before a beautifully presented intro followed by simply put blistering double bass accompanied by a very classically modern toned guitar, as if ARCH ENEMY and IRON MAIDEN just made a baby. The storm has come, thundering vocals as dark and heavy as they get, etching the death metal side, followed with the melodic screams turned right into clean vocals, now at this stage as a writer I’m a little lost for words as to how to describe just what I hear, with so much going on generally I’d instantly go, no too much combined and it won’t work, but in this case these guys have nailed it from the aforementioned intro to the mini breakdown accompanying the verse, the symphonic melody to a simplistic but flawlessly fitting solo this song is one of the best intro tracks to an album I’ve heard in 20 odd years.

The title alone made me fall in love with this song, the more I listen the more artists I hear influences from, some which will be very welcomed others, not so much but I personally love them all. This one in particlar I hear so much ANDY BIERSACK from BLACK VEIL BRIDES now I am very aware of the hate they receive but never understood it, anyway sticking with the pianist intro which is so refreshing with Metal music these days this track shows in comparison to the first one, just how much this band has to offer, from parental terrifying vocals, to very nice rhythmic riffs, a chunky bridge, to a heart stopping brekdown which is ironically accompanied by ‘Goodbye, this is the end’ I think all in all this would be the more radio friendly track off of the EP.

This was such an amazing surprise for me personally, the almost angelic toned intro, I’ve heard that voice before, after 7 replays and countless subtractions of female vocals, it hit me…CONQUER DIVIDE’S own Kiareley Castillo made an appearance on this track which made it incredibly interesting with a symphonic backbeat the whole way combined once again beautifully with every that you now know makes SHOT DOWN SOUTH who they are this makes for something very standout ish..nothing more to be said here…so you think it’s all over….NOPE!! Blindesided is the best way to put it with a very RONNIE RADKE style rap in the middle this band is just full of surprises!

Now THIS is Metalcore from the getgo! From the KILLSWITCH/ALL THAT REMAINS intro all the way to THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA drums this is a Metalcore fans cherry to top off anything, but the one thing that stood the most to me here are the vocals, for those who struggle on vocals in the heavier genre of music I urge you all, google these and just read, this is a piece of true art in its own! Lyrically amazing, Musically engaging, the ringing pinch harmonic 2-3 times this is what Metalcore is! This is why these guys are going far!!

I’m running out of things to say good about these guys but I can’t say anything bad! The introduction to this song has CHILDREN OF BODOM written all over it! From the introduction to the signature ALEXI Yeow! I do get a very TYPE O NEGATIVE/PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH vibe from this track but it’s much more Deathcore to the bone than the above said, this is one that again hits all the right notes in the right places. A very dark vibe that is matched with a PARKWAY DRIVE vocal to close!

We’ve reached the end and I for one am disheartened by this, will these guys go out with a bang or will they be buried in smoke? First thought of this song is it’s missing a few little things, personally I’d have opened with this track as the intro is total album opening material, however that aside this song smashes the barricades of what I’ve said about this band thus far, in the best way possible, this song is so diverse once again I highlight the lyrics this does really have a message to those who struggle and are down, I had noticed it was missing a breakdown…I joke, this has by far the chunkiest breakdown this EP offers , you need to get in the pit for this one, its the only way you will appreciate this one fully!, With the cross of incredible lyrics, vocalised perfectly with very unique guitar work standing out so much from the average music, these guys areas good as you’ll hear right now!

Baring in mind I’ve very little data so to speak, on these guys I was slightly overwhelmed  with this review and in the hopefully very near future I can hear more from these guys and maybe get a little back information to clean up this review a little, all in all keep an eye out for these guys cause they’ll be on the main stage before they realize!

The Harmonic’s – Strut [EP] Review

We’re back in business on more levels than one, after a 3 month absence with technical difficulties I’m back reviewing and what a way to start back than wit a review of the returning The Harmonic’s from Nottingham UK!? I fell in love with these guys sound the second I heard their first Extended Play Sugar? Which was reviewed a few months back with a bonus single not released on either releases James Dean. Without any further delay lets get right down to it

With their unique one off sound this song really starts off with such a rhythm that you really just want to strut and move and not stop, it comes packed with really well written lyrics that compliment the music absolutely perfect, reminding me very much of a modern Sex Pistol’s meets The Rolling Stones , you could picture Mick Jagger strutting through the streets of  Nottingham, causing a massive traffic jam with some old skool Joan Jett style punk models, this is an amazing start to the EP

This is a very different approach for the five piece outfit but don’t let that line by any means sway you off it, because it’s a track that maybe a little out of their comfort zone but they make it work really well, with a more rockier sound than usual and a little slower it brings a sound styling of Rancid quite a bit who would be punk pioneers at this stage but modern. Vocals are very like Tim Armstrong which I genuinely love, after the second or third listen this one will stick with you.

Once again different in every good way possible, I found a very strange vibe from this one almost like something Shania Twain meets Blondie but from a male side which is actually reallly cool (extra l for emphasis) it’s more or less the ballad off this EP and it’s a such a cool contrast of styles there’s actually so much going on in this song but put together fantastically, huge respect for again pushing the boundaries on the last 2 songs I’ve listened to off this.

Does this title scream punk or what? From the get go of this track I knew I was going to love it! True punk aspect of this one from the laugh at the beginning to the lyrics, the music, the feel, this song is personally my favourite off this EP and what a killer way to close it, I actually don’t think I can find a single thing wrong with this track, I can’t praise it enough but this alone is enough to encourage me to buy this!

Seriously what can I say? This entire album pushes the boundaries and comfort zone of this band and for that alone I have a massive respect for, having that said it may take others a few listens to get into it, but because I have such a high appreciation for trying new things with music I personally love this album, It’s every bit as catchy and as good as SUGAR? Flawless as far as I am concerned. So I for one can’t wait to hear more from these!

Symptoms of Silence – Visions [EP] Review

[SYMPTOMS OF SILENCE, are a six piece metalcore band from Ireland who are also set to embark on a huge opportunity to support the mighty Australian Metalcore outfit known as THE AMITY AFFLICTION. Who actually are quite in certain aspects like THE AMITY AFFLICTION, these guys certainly are heavy as hell with the cross of clean vocals to, growls and screams, with insanely heavy riffs to compliment it, they range from so much I can’t specify influences so, down to the EP.

With a nicely fitting 20-30 second instrumental introduction from this it gives a nice chilling feel to the band before the first track his.

When I said this hits it hits fast and hard, the cross with the vocals, the breakdowns are just out of this world with these guys, there’s honestly very little I can say about this song,  the pinches give a very nice Gojira feel mixed with many other influences, the chilled break before the solo it’s a fantastic opening track to what I can only expect to be an amazing EP

Jumping right into insanely heavy vocals about waking from nightmares and pulling yourself together I can straight off the bat tell these aren’t just lyrics the fit these are stories, which is why I wish more would read the lyrics at the very least of metal artists, followed by clean vocals that honestly fit really well, very ISSUES influenced from what I can hear with this, which makes for an interesting review, it’s certainly worth a mention of the breakdowns and synths with this band too.

One of the first things that stood out to me was the break/bridge ‘This is the part where you die’ don’t let that fool you at all you can tell from the following line that death with this song is more about death of a part of your life and are searching for the answers to whats next, once again the breaks the synths, the riffs this song is a heavy duty song and oddly ironically has a small Bring Me The Horizon feel to it, back when they were good, before anyone gets annoyed with this haha… this one though is certainly one not to be taken lightly.

This has a very nice psychotic introduction to make you feel a little on edge and keeps though the song, this one is more a melodic death metal feel which just so happens to be my specialty so I first off have to say with the vocals sounding like Children of Bodom the synths like Dark Tranquility the breakdowns As I Lay Dying and several other aspects of other bands I have to say this one is the one for me off this album, it’s heavy, fast, aggressive it has all the right feels at the right parts!

These all sit one off another that you can barely tell where one starts and one finish as to why I believe the idea they were going with was almost math metalcore which is definitely an original brand by these guys, this one is also fast paced, heavy, synthy breakdown galore another one with something for everyone this, sadly brings us to the end of this EP, BUT I have a feeling this isn’t the last of these guys, as this EP really highlights surreal potential

These guys are a force to be heard! To the right ears these guys will be signed within the first beat that is heard! Definately give these a chance and if you like what you hear head over to iTunes and grab a copy of this today, or catch them on the road with The Amity Afffliction this Wednesday in Dublin.

Beware of You – Self Portraits – [EP] Review

A very special surprise we have not 1 but 2 EP’s of BEWARE OF YOU This is the first one released back in 2015 so with no introduction necessary lets get straight to it

Losing control of your mind but trying to keep control of your emotions is what this track is intended on telling us, this is a heavier one for these, with a higher SUM41 feel to the music but the lyrics stay pretty much the same message is simple that when someone causes you to lose control best to lose them than it.

This one has a very very well structured style with the music it’s really well put together now usually you’d say x song reminds me of this, but in this case lyrically I could say that this could have influenced My Nemesis by Five Finger Death Punch, it’s all about giving your all but getting nothing in return, being a huge fan of above mentioned band I think this one holds a special place for me.

This track is for me as well very relative in certain circumstances but lets keep it professional, your playing a game you’ll never win, chasing a heart that isn’t meant to be yours, but all good comes to those who wait, with the right intentions it’ll work, every second you spend waiting is a losing game but the rules will change if they are meant to.

The messages in this album is quite the same through all tracks so I’m thinking personally if you listen to it through you’ll hear a story that is being told, seeking love, not caring what others think, and another mention to the music in this too is just honestly fantastic these guys have talent that will be seen in the near future, I love the hidden suggestion in this one too.

When talking of pop punk whats the major writing influences? Heartbreak and recover, SPOILER ALERT! That’s exactly what this song is, it’s about pretty much overcoming and recovering, sounding like after a break up and torturing yourself you realize, I’ll get over you and I’ll be alright this song needs to be brought back in time and shown to all those that have thought that’s it, my heart is broken that there is hope and 9 times out of 10 you’ll find your answers hidden in song and this is that song!

For those interested these guys can be seen opening for The Amity Affliction in Dublin this Wednesday keep and eye out for them at the merch booth.

Beware of You – Bears! [EP] Review

BEWARE OF YOU are a 4 piece pop punk outfit from Dublin Ireland who are set to embark on a massive break hitting Dublin this Wednesday, opening for Australian Metalcore titans THE AMITY AFFLICTION, Starting just over a year ago these have really been knocking down the boundaries of the usual irish music scene, with such varied music influences such as You Me At Six, Paramore, Four Year Strong and A Day To Remember they really bring a very different and exciting element to just about any stage they hit, aside from wishing them the very best this coming Wednesday I have another track by track review of their EP BEARS! So without wasting any more time lets get down to it!

Straight away you can hear some of the influences you’ll notice with the vocals as said in the introduction these are insanely catchy! Vocal styling are very Paramore but with her own twist which is exactly what people want, similar to their music preferences but with a unique turn, music is very old skool punk which you are probably thinking Joan Jett meets Paramore how will that work? I say it works very well, along with the music that is on a heavier aspect of the style going by the aforementioned influences this song is nothing short of an explosive introduction to the EP.

Going by this track it’s hard to call these guys pop punk as the music is heavy as hell for the style with sweet breakdowns that just give the perfect time to bang your head and then bop around! This song though is definitely something I can see making these guys HUGE!!! This is for the me track that’s gonna get these noticed, it has everything! Sweet riffs, perfect set lyrics, and one last time the breakdowns are whoa!! It even has a little Sick Puppies feel with the bass solo in the middle. Definitely gonna make these heard, don’t be surprised if you see this on TV soon!

This one is pretty much the ballad of the album, but from the very beginning sends a VERY powerful message, Moving on, letting go, to not be afraid, there’s always someone that will show you the light when in the darkness you’ll find a way, nothing lasts forever but you’ll always find a way.

This song screams Fall Out Boy for me personally, in once again true pop punk style this song is insanely catchy and sets off another great message, that we all come with our proverbial baggage, but after constant negativity on someone’s ‘baggage’ there’s only so much you can take,’New Parts, New Starts and New Hearts’ is literally what this song says! That they are all you need, to carry on.

This song straight from the get go is every 90’s 00’s teenage perfect style song, Pretty much about taking on anything that comes their way, they are not invincible but they are not afraid, this is a very well put together song, and the music is really 90’s pop punk with in my personal opinion a very Alkaline Trio-esque Stupid Kid feel that for long time pop punk fans like myself is just so refreshing to hear one more time, this song comes off just fantastically.

This is a negative intending song but with all the positive outlooks which straight up takes talent to manage that to begin with, it’s extremely hard to write a song with a positive/negative feeling and have it make sense, coming from a fellow writer I know this, lyrically again sends a great message, and the breakdowns return again all the right parts in all the right places!

This one is a fantastic one to close this EP with with a very blunt message, I’ve taken all I can and I’m done, the music is very Misery Business with the lyrics hitting closer to Fences, this is heavily influenced on Paramore from what I hear, even the bridge up to the solo is all influenced but once again original, Anyone who were in the era of Paramore’s success is going to LOVE this track and I am certainly one of those.

This EP is nothing short of honestly a teen dream or in my case one that can look back those many years ago when I first discovered all these styles of bands with such a range these will always keep you entertained, and I personally can’t wait to hear from these in the near future!

For those interested these guys can be seen opening for The Amity Affliction in Dublin this Wednesday keep and eye out for them at the merch booth.

The Harmonic’s – Sugar [EP] Review

THE HARMONICS are a 4 piece outfit from Nottingham, UK. While they classify themselves as Rock N’ Roll it’s hard to sit just as Rock N’ Roll while they have so many elements of mixed genre’s from Swing music like Frank Sinatra to Punk artists like The Jam and Joan Jett with a taste of Chuck Berry and almost everything in between with a hint of funk!

Swinging right into action (pun very intended) really brings us right back to the 60’s in a typical swinging 60’s lyrical and musically themed song, as it would be considered an introduction to the album we can forgive the short length of the song and to be honest its the only thing I have negative to say about it, very well structured song, even the solo is dynamically 60’s based, a great started for any band.

Absolutely loved this song, has to be the one that stands out on this EP, a very Madness meets Pistols feel to it which is epic to see anyone resurrect these kind of artists as inspiration, I could picture a video recorded in the busy streets of the UK where the band strolls by boldy walking in front of a big red bus (very cliche) but that’s what fits this, another fantastically written song.

 TRACK 3: IN 1993

Keeping with the same theme of the previous songs this one is another one that is very old school with a taste of George Thorogood in the vocal department, this is where I’d like to point out the very talented work of the brass instruments which is a bold approach to modern day music but again these guys make it work, The only thing against this song is it in my personal opinion is missing something but I can’t put my fingers on it, something as simple as missing a note or 2 in the chorus, but all in all another great piece.

It’s my job to point out the wrongs and rights in the albums I review and I try to keep it as critical but fair as possible but this track has nothing I can find wrong with it! The introductive guitar is beautiful the brass again accompanying it in the verse, the rhythm, everything this song you guys really hit it here! The chorus is one of the most captivating things I’ve written about yet. the second it hits you are caught there is no escaping it and there is no denying this is the song that will make these guys known!

This one stands out a lot personally, I wasn’t sure what I thought of this at first but it really sticks in your head, it’s something that I imagine Bowling For Soup may write, it sounds parodic but at the same time once again insanely addictive once you hear it 2-3 times, very hard to criticize this song at all, unless you consider being compared to party punk icons to be insulting.

Minus the 1-2 odd little things that come with any band these guys cannot be denied their talent, the old new approach is something that stands out and in my professional opinion needs to be heard, these guys have the talent to with the right motivation hit the charts or just about anything they want to, they have a very different style which is exactly what music needs! Keep it up guys and I for one will be looking forward to future releases

Manus Mortis EP Review

MANUS MORTIS are a 5 piece Thrash Deathcore band from Springfield, MO, First off there is very little background I can offer you guys on this band but upon first listening impressions if you are a fan of Brain Drill, Oceano or Asesino, with slight vocal hints of DevilDriver these guys are certainly a must listen to band, or if you just want something heavier than the average band look no further! These guys don’t mess about by any means, with Breakdowns that will leave your neck sore but your ears wanting more right down to a stripped down old skool Grindcore sound that is immense, followed by a Gothic Black Speed Metal Chorus style. Without wasting any more time down to the 6 Track review!

As the title probably suggests right off the bat this is one heavy hitter song! I’m still absorbing just how heavy these guys are and trust me when I say they are heavy they are heavy! The introduction line before the music actually kicks in is fantastic first off, pretty much to invite you to join the journey, the music kicks in old fashioned Grindcore style it’s fast pace and sheer aggression it’s honestly a bit overwhelming in a good way, as I said takes me well back, from deep droPped vocals in the verse to higher pitched keys in the chorus and the crunchiest breakdown I’ve heard in a while this makes a fantastic opening track for the EP

The band really kick it into a higher gear right here with the same raw Grindcore sound but a lot of elements of Speed/Thrash mixed with a very tasty side of Gothic Black Metal BUT don’t let the mix of acclaimed ‘dark satanic music’ twist you from checking this because with such a unique cross of styles in this one, this if you do have an ear for this style of music it gets rather personal, which you’ll notice more as the song comes to a close, this is fast, heavy Grindcore style at the peak of its prime right here! Personally my favorite off this EP, this one has a LOT of breakdowns!!!.

This one is why I say this band reminds me a lot of Brain Drill and Asesino in particular with even a potential taste of Viking Crown this album does not stop bringing the heavy and although this specific genre of metal is a very acquired taste this song is extremely well put together, with a very abrupt ending which actually sits really nicely into track 4

Piano…YES you read that right definitely for me this is a first for the genre, a beautifully written into on keyboards that you may not think would suit the genre but it sits absolutely beautifully in place for this song, this for me stands out the most definitely, the music has a more Iron Maiden vibe over the guitar with a blinding breakdown in the middle returning right back on que to the intense riffage that is OBLIVIOUS

This just keeps getting heavier and heavier with astonishing growls and screams that will make any fan of the genre keep begging for more and more, but once again I cannot stress enough for this EP in particular has a very emotional/revengeful feel depending on what way you look at it. Once again all the right breaks in all the right places!

This track’s intro is very similar to the end of the previous I’m not sure was that intended but it works very well together, Once again it has a very heavy meaty feel with, yes you guessed it, surreal breakdowns, once again this one lyrically actually really speaks a lot personally to me, there is however a slightly less serious ‘WooHoo’ just before the mid way breakdown which will make you take a little step back and wonder, but its a nice touch to show that Grindcore isn’t all serious and angry there are cool little elements of surprise in this one.

So we’ve once again reached the end of another review and it’s with great pleasure to say upon listening to this 7 track EP, this band has not let up once, and this in my opinion will be this bands Walk! obviously about 200 BPM faster but this as a fantastic closer for a very very impressive EP, the breakdown is a lot less of what you’ve heard on the previous 6 but once again, keeping it original, this is definitely MANUS MANTIS We don’t give a fuck anthem, Literally! The final 30-40 seconds of this track showcases some of the heaviest stuff off this EP!

While MANUS MORTIS’ genre may not be for everyone you can not take away the fact that these guys are original, are heavy and are genuinely a band I for one want to hear more of, Grindcore, Deathcore, Goregrind are all genre’s that are in my opinion very overlooked in the metal scene because people think its noise, I for one strongly disagree, In my personal opinion to understand metal in general you need to be intelligent and if this genre is your cup of tea, or coffee if you prefer I highly recommend to check these guys out, the EP is free to listen to on YouTube and Spotify NOW!
